Project Handouts

We purposely left the project handouts off the blog. We want that work to be done IN CLASS. The idea is to promote teamwork and cooperation. Additionally we want to foster good conversations about these topics. Students will have plenty of time to finish the project if they use their time wisely.

Additional Note: When you don't find something on the website it is customary to ask for it politely. There may be a reason it is not on there. Please and thank you are common professional terms used in the work place when exchanging ideas and making requests whether in person or on-line. Quoting someone as a way of trying to call them out is not appropriate. (See comment under Wednesday Class). Also note we are not required to provide a website for this class, it is done as an extra way to help. We are only required to provide one copy of any work we want to have done and that has been done in school.

With that we understand that utilizing a course website is a learning process and are positive you did not mean to be pushy in cyber space. The reason we know this is true is that we have great kids that work hard and are VERY polite! Keep it up and thanks for making HMS a great place to be!!!

Wednesday, May 20, 2009

Wednesday Class

Today in science class we had a number of things happening. First of all we addressed the following dates and their importance:
Thursday (Tomorrow): Rock ID Lab Test
Friday: Story Due and Artistic Rock Cycle Activity Due
Next Tuesday: Rock Test (Written)

Therefore, today in class we did the following:
1. Created a "cheat-cheat" for the rock id test tomorrow. This was done on a regular piece of paper and any information was/is fair.
2. The rocks were available for observation and study.
3. A review sheet for next weeks test was available. Students started to work on this.
4. Time was given to work on assignments due on Friday. Most student's did not get this far.

Many of these documents, including the review sheet, are available on our resource page.

Tuesday Class

Today in science we did an artistic activity on the rock cycle. A copy of today's activity can be found on our resource page. There is no due date set for this yet, but will likely be early next week. The only homework that is currently assigned is the creative writing story on the rock cycle that is due this week Friday.

Monday Class

Today in science class we worked (for the last time in class) on our Rock Cycle Creative Stories. Information for this can be found on our resource page. This creative writing activity will require two things being handed in: 1. Rough Draft. 2. Final Draft.
Those two things will be due on this week FRIDAY!

Therefore, the current homework assigned is the Rock Cycle Creative Story which is due on Friday.

Thursday Class

Today we accomplished two things:
1. We discussed Metamorphic rocks and showed examples of gneiss.
2. We started looking at the rock cycle by doing a creative writing activity. This activity will take us into tomorrow as well.
For more information on rocks and to access the online document of this writing activity go to our resource section or click here.

There is currently no homework assigned.

Wednesday Class

Today in science class we did a larger CPS test. Then we wrapped up the sedimentary rock section by finishing the lab from yesterday and reading some text that was about sedimentary rocks. There is currently no homework due.

Tuesday, January 27, 2009

Tuesday Class

Today in science class we did a Sedimentary Rock lab. This can not be done at home. Therefore, if you missed class today you will need to find a time to complete the lab within the next week. There is currently no homework assigned.

Monday Class

Today in science we did 2 things:
1. We did our presentations on weathering that we prepared on Friday. Students took notes on their classmates presentations.
2. Watched a video that showed an overview of rocks.

Tomorrow we look at sedimentary rocks!
There is currently no homework assigned.

Friday Class

Today in class we did another CPS test (Malefyt Only, Wandel's class will do it on Monday). We then had a short discussion about "weathering". After the discussion we handed out an activity about weathering that will have the students becoming involved in a drama skit about a particular type of weathering that they were assigned. This activity can be found in our resource section.

Thursday Class

Today in class we finished the Igneous rock lab from yesterday. Students should be able to identify the following rocks: basalt, gabbro, granite, scoria, pumice, obsidean, and rhyolite. After the lab was finished we did a reading activity from the science book that students DO NOT have with them. Currently there is no homework assigned!

Monday Class

Today in science class we had an interesting start to our new science unit...Rocks, Minerals, and Fossils. To get us thinking about earth history and earth science, we did a scientific inquiry activity that was based around watching the movie "Ice Age: The Great Meltdown" Hopefully students not only had a fun time watching this kids movie, but also started asking questions about future topics in 7th grade science!
